Introduction
The Interventional Consulting Room of Shenzhen Second People’s Hospital was established in June 1996, initially as a sub-unit of the Radiology Department. In January 2011, it was officially established as an independent department under the leadership of Director Du Duanming, making it one of the earliest interventional therapy specialties in Shenzhen. In 2020, the department was recognized as a Shenzhen Clinical Medicine Key Specialty (2020–2024) and, in 2023, was successfully included in the National Capacity-Building Center for Minimally Invasive Tumor Intervention (focused on liver cancer). Additionally, the department serves as the president unit of the Shenzhen Medical Association Interventional Physicians Branch and is one of the first departments in Shenzhen introduced through the“Sanming Project of Medical Excellence.”
Specialized Features
The department consists of an interventional specialty outpatient clinic, wound and stoma clinic, interventional ward, and DSA operating rooms, covering a total ward area of approximately 1,100 square meters with 30 available beds. It is equipped with advanced facilities, including the Philips large flat-panel FD20 system, Philips dual C-arm FD20/15, Siemens large flat-panel Artis-Q-ceiling angiography system, radioactive particle TPS system, Changcheng MTI-5DT microwave tumor treatment system, Endocare cryoablation device, ultrasound equipment, peripheral vascular diagnostic devices, contrast injection systems, and hydrogen-oxygen nebulizers.
The department specializes in comprehensive interventional treatments for primary liver cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, cervical cancer, and metastatic liver and lung tumors. It also excels in the minimally invasive treatment of vascular disorders such as hemangiomas, vascular malformations, and diabetic foot. Routine procedures include vascular interventional treatments for tumors, tumor ablation, embolization, implantation of arterial/venous infusion ports, brachytherapy with radioactive seeds, balloon angioplasty and stenting for peripheral and renal arteries, percutaneous transhepatic (splenic) portal/venous angiography, transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts (TIPS), and minimally invasive interventions for benign prostatic hyperplasia. Annually, the department handles approximately 4,000 outpatient visits, over 1,000 inpatient cases, and performs more than 2,000 interventional procedures.
Professional Team
The department boasts a highly skilled team of professionals, including eight physicians, with two holding senior professional titles, one at the associate senior level, two PhDs, and five master’s degree holders. The nursing team consists of 16 members, including one chief nurse, eight nurse managers, and one with a master’s degree, with all nurses holding at least a bachelor’s degree. In 2014, through the Shenzhen“Sanming Project of Medical Excellence,”the department introduced the innovative cryosurgical treatment team led by Professor Xu Kecheng from Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital. Currently, the department has one Shenzhen healthcare system special-grade talent (D-level).
Education and Research
The Interventional Therapy Department is affiliated with the Provincial Radiology Resident Standardized Training Base and serves as a training base for specialized nurses under the Guangdong Nursing Association and for community wound and stoma specialists in Shenzhen. It is also a master’s degree training site for Shenzhen University and Shantou University and provides undergraduate internships and clinical training for Shenzhen University, Guangdong Medical University, and Hunan Medical University.
In recent years, the department has undertaken and completed nine research projects funded by various levels of government, established five clinical research projects, and received one municipal-level scientific achievement award. The team has published 15 SCI papers, over 60 papers in national core journals, obtained 20 utility model patents, and applied for three additional patents. The department has contributed to one academic monograph as the chief editor, participated in seven academic books, and co-authored one wound management training textbook. Team members hold over 70 positions in major academic societies and have contributed to two national expert consensus documents and one provincial-level guideline.
